A heavy amount of the book is about Sophie and the unhealthy obsession she has with her weight. Her scales, eating plans, and binging are described more thoroughly than most of the other characters. This makes it feel like reading someone's diary you're not supposed to, oddly intrusive into the life of a fictional character.
The secondary characters - coworkers, her unfeeling husband, the intriguing other man, and friends - seem roughly sketched out, on the periphery of her personal problems. It seems insinuated that her husband is making her body image issues worse, while one of her friends encourages the consistent weight loss to compete.
I can't fully empathize with Sophie, which leaves me not really interested in seeing what happens to her next. This is a shame because the writing is decent.
Struggling to hold on to all she thought was true Sophie's world is soon turned on it's head. This is a great read, easy to follow and a can't put down. I loved it and quickly moved onto episode two!

It didn't take me long to fall in love with Sophie and now I am well and truly hooked on Stages. Rushing off to buy the next few novella's now! The characters are well drawn and there's lots to look forward to in this storyline.
