Eva's daughter Shelly wants a baby. Almost as much as Eva wants a grandchild. But it's not happening. Fertility treatments didn't work, and adoption seems overwhelming.
Then, one morning at Bob Evans, a teenager named Cecelia sits down at the table behind Eva's. Eva can't help overhearing. Cecelia is pregnant and in no position to raise a child.
Eva knows what's best for the baby, and for Cecelia. And for Shelly. Eva knows what's best for everyone, always. Or almost always.

This is not my kind of book. I tend to try avoiding sappy, emotional "chick lit" types of novels -- especially when their titles are ambiguous and the cover practically screams "cheesily stereotypical." I have tried reading them before. I never get far with them. They always seem to disappoint me in some way or another. I don't know why I downloaded this book. With that said, I loved it! I went through so many emotions and upheavals with every twist and turn, but it was absolutely worth it! I have never been in the position of any of the characters, couldn't relate to what they were going through -- and still went through all of these emotions with them. That, in my opinion, is exceptional writing!

Almost Always A Novel of Adoption eBook Bobbi Reed Reviews
I loved this book so much I hated to finish it. I hope there is a sequel. In the beginning I thought I had it figured out but I'm glad I didn't give up on it and kept on reading, because I was so wrong! Eva and her husband John are very loving and likable people. It's not often that you find a middle aged heroine and her hubby drawing you into their world. The writing was very good because I believed every word! lol IT COULD HAPPEN. )
This is a heart-warming story with feelings we all can relate to, whether from a child's view or that of parents. Or both.
So many emotions that we all have dealt with. This book reminds us of good times and difficult times from different points of view than just our own. We don't always see the true feelings of those closest to us. So often, we see what we expect to see or want to see. This book shows that we can make it through most anything with family. And family is comprised of those we love and care about, whether related to us or not. A little love and caring can conquer almost anything life throws at us
I really enjoyed this quick and easy read. I was pleasantly surprised (and a little shocked) that this was the author's first work. The book had a good, solid story and well developed characters. I liked the flow of the book as it moved smoothly from chapter to chapter keeping my interest the entire way from beginning to end. In fact, I stayed up late to finish the book. I had to know what happened to everyone.
Even though the story is somewhat predictable and I guessed what was going to happen before it did, this was still a fun book to read. I'm pretty sure I would read more from this author. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quick, easy, light read
Main character reminds me of me, because I think I have good ideas for the lives of others, also. We both also think they are "Almost Always" right. Like Eva, I know a couple who have had no luck with what are very expensive fertility treatments. In Eva's case, her daughter and son-in-law had painted their nursery blue once, then pink, both times learning the birth mom had decided to keep the baby after all. There are surprises, multiple happy endings in this stand-alone book, and all the other stuff of life. The charming cover photo is because an unsuspected character decides to enter a Christmas gingerbread house contest, which does figure throughout the book.
First, this is not a "Christmas book", don't let the cover fool you. It has some holiday moments, but it's not centered around Christmas. But it is a great story of what happens when several lives collide. I was worried about 70% of the way through that I was going to be disappointed by the ending and I was mentally preparing a review about how upset it made me. But this book and I, we came to terms in the end. You'll have to read it to find out what I mean.
I also want to say I loved the main character. At first, she annoyed me. But she reminds me so much of my own mother, always fixing things until they are broken, that I couldn't help but relate to her.
Excellent writing and rather warm and cozy. Would make a great January snow storm read.
I read this one cover to cover once I started it. The story of a mother whose children are grown and gone but who still longs for love, affection, and close relationships. She is an imperfect person who butts into things she probably shouldn't, but whose heart is in the right place. Eva's daughter has been unable to have a child and fate places Eva in the right place at the right time to correct that situation, or does it? The characters are well developed and the plot is interesting. Yes, there are some editing errors, but I didn't find them to be so glaring as to take away from the story-line. I actually found myself comparing some of my own well-intentioned faults to Eva's. Often meaning well, but butting in where I probably don't belong. I did enjoy this one.
I finished the book in two days. It was better then I expected. The story was plausible, with no fairy tail details, which I dislike. My initial reaction was dislike for the protagonist, as I found her behavior very annoying. She had never worked outside of her home, raised two successful children and was convinced she had the solutions to all problems. As the story progresses, she began to realize that her children were adults and didn't need her constant assistance, and she became a more likeable person. The story ended satisfactorily, and I was glad I read it.
As always, I want to mention the editing. It was well done. I noticed no misspellings, use of wrong words, and poor punctuation. These things are important to me, as frequent mistakes are very disruptive when I'm reading. I do recommend this book.
