From the author of The Scarlet Letter The thrilling tale of three American artists whose search for artistic inspiration leads to romance and murder.
The sculpture galleries and classical architecture of nineteenth-century Rome set the stage for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s gothic romance The Marble Faun. While touring the Eternal City in search of inspiration and authentic beauty, American artists Miriam, Hilda, and Kenyon soon discover that their Italian companion, Donatello—charming and in love with Miriam—bears a striking resemblance to the marble Faun of Praxiteles. But for Miriam, their carefree pursuit is also an escape from a dark past. And when a mysterious man appears, trailing the friends’ path and tormenting Miriam, the group’s travels take a sinister turn.
The first novel to explore the effects of European sensibilities on American values, The Marble Faun anticipated the genre of travel novels later exemplified by The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James and The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain. Vividly evoking the great works of art and architecture in Rome, it also found favor as an unlikely guidebook for many Victorian tourists. James Russell Lowell said “The nineteenth century has produced no more purely original writer than Mr. Hawthorne.” Here, the author of The House of the Seven Gables offers an unforgettable and suspenseful tale.

The Marble Faun Or The Romance of Monte Beni edition by Nathaniel Hawthorne Literature Fiction eBooks
I never knew of this novel by Hawthorne, written in 1860. He wrote this after spending a year and a half in Rome with his family. At first it seemed a trivial account of four friends, three of them artists, spending a time imbibing in the artistic culture of Rome. Marian, a painter with a mysterious past; Hilda, a copyist, with an innocence obvious to all; Kenyon, a sculptor and very rational person; and Donatello, from Tuscany, who has attached himself to the trio. They romp through the city, much like other tourists, as more of their character and relationships are revealed. Suddenly, a murder occurs that fractures the friendships, and fractures their souls. Innocence is lost as the crime changes their lives forever, and the guilty ones experience the gulf between sin and righteousness. There is no forgiveness or redemption to soften the ending.Product details

The Marble Faun Or The Romance of Monte Beni edition by Nathaniel Hawthorne Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Nathaniel Hawthorne and his family lived for several years in Italy, and his experiences there inspired him to write The Marble Faun, or the Romance of Monte Beni. Published in 1860, it became his best selling novel, but few readers today have ever heard of it, much less read it. The book opens in 19th century Rome, where a group of friends, three American artistic types and one Italian, are enjoying an idyllic summer in each other's company. Donatello is a young Italian count, who very much resembles Praxiteles' faun statue, and he falls hard for the enigmatic Miriam, who harbors an unhappy secret. The sculptor, Kenyon, loves Hilda, an ethereal copyist who, like a medieval princess, resides in an ancient tower, where she keeps the light burning at the Virgin's shrine, surrounded by doves. One beautiful evening, a very personal murder occurs, and the foursome's idyll is shattered. They separate, each one grappling with the sense of guilt that destroys their happiness and their innocence.
As the title suggests, The Marble Faun is a romance, but, typical of Hawthorne, a dark and brooding one. Being a product of his times and his religious upbringing, Hawthorne could resist inserting a tedious amount of philosophical contemplation, perhaps to highlight the moral symbolism that permeates the story. More pleasing is the time he devoted to describing the landscapes, monuments, art, and street life of Rome and the Tuscan countryside. There are even a few magical elements as well, such as the wine that is made on Donatello's estate that cannot fail to impart happiness to the drinker. While this region has undoubtedly changed since Hawthorne's tour, nearly everything that he referred to remains to be viewed to this day.
The Marble Faun demands patience from its readers, but take it slowly (I needed the entire summer!) and your perseverance is rewarded. But be forewarned the friends are reunited at book's end, and the final chapter is bittersweet.
great read
I got this book for my High School AP English class it was a good book but I didn't have an appreciation for it until after I was done with the class. As I look back now it was a very interesting book.
Obviously Hawthorne enjoyed a trip to Italy and felt the weight of history all around him. But he felt he needed a vague and sentimental morality tale to hang his travelogue on. And he included, consciously or not, plenty of prejudices about how woman and her influence over man causes much of the world's misery.
The concept of a character evoking a "faun" of mythology was not convincing. I thought the storyline was overly convoluted.
Dear Hawthorne Lovers,
The Marble Faun is probably the least successful of Hawthorne's novels (except the unfinished ones, obviously). But for those who want to have a comprehensive understanding of his craft and its later direction, I concede that it's a must-read. If you are looking for a first Hawthorne novel, try The Scarlet Letter instead. The House of the Seven Gables is probably the second best, and The Blithedale Romance, the third.
Happy reading,
Diane in Metuchen
This was one of my favorite novels in college. Why is it you have chosen to publish such an abridged version??? There are 49 chapters in this book. You have sold me only 23 of them. How silly and irresponsible and cruel. I wonder how many read the story so incompletely because of your irresponsibility. Ridiculous.
